Healthy for a Lifetime

Healthy for a Lifetime offers a powerful and positive message of hope to everyone who has seen family and friends affected by heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other conditions. There are few things more important than our health and while much time, effort, and money has been spend on ways to improve health over the past 50 years, obesity has nearly tripled, diabetes is up about 600%, and heart disease remains the leading killer.

Only whole food plant-based nutrition has been scientifically proven to actually reverse all these conditions without negative side effects, but this information has not been widely shared with the public. This is an opportunity to hear the evidence firsthand from the leading experts in a relaxed, fun, and non-medical atmosphere where all are welcome.

Healthy for a Lifetime will take place Saturday, October 19, 2019 starting at 9:00 a.m. and concluding around 5:00 p.m. at the CHI Health Center in Omaha (455 N. 10th St., Omaha, NE). The cost for the seminar is $49.50 per person ($39.50 for full-time students) and includes a buffet lunch, free parking, and a gift bag. Click here for a  printable information sheet. Click here to go to their website. Click here to register.

The Revelation of Relational Integrity

James Rafferty, one of the founders of Lightbearers, recently wrote this blog looking at the first three chapters of Revelation. I found it enlightening and want to share it with you.

What is Relational Integrity?

Relational = “concerning the way in which two or more people or things are connected”

Integrity = “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness”

This last year and a half I have been fully immersed in discipleship ministry. We grew together, hurting, hugging, helping, and healing. We learned about the quality of being honest, moral, and connected – about relational integrity.

Relational integrity at its best is seen in Jesus Christ. Consider His honest words to us through the faithful aged disciples imprisoned on the isle of Patmos. Jesus says in part:

You don’t love Me as you didEphesus

Some among you say you are My people when you not – Smyrna, Philadelphia

You are allowing things into your life which I hate – Pergamos

You are allowing people to teach ideas that lead to faithless self-worship – Thyatira

You are believers in name but the relationship we once had is lifeless and dying—Sardis

You make Me want to throw up with all your knowledge minus practical love and faith Please let Me back into your life so that we can turn this around and make our relationship hot again – Laodicea

Pretty intense!

Jesus responds to our relational failures by turning up the heat on His unchanging love.

But that’s only part of the message. In the context of these failures (that not one of us are immune to), there is in God “no variableness neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). Even in the prophetic book of Revelation Jesus responds to our relational failures by turning up the heat on His unchanging love.

First-God stays with us in spite of us, He is in our “midst” (Revelation 1:13).

Second-God affirms us and communicates to us from the perspective of acceptance and hope (Revelation 2:2).

Third-God is honest with us, He doesn’t gloss over our failures—it’s not always easy to be honest (Revelation 2:4).

Fourth-God makes promises to restore us (Revelation 2:7).

Fifth-God fulfills His promises to us and conquers sin and death in our behalf (Revelation1:5, 18).

Sixth-God exercises faith towards us by giving us time to respond to His goodness and turn around (Revelation 2:21).

Seventh-God exposes the true source of our dysfunctional relationship with Him and with each other (Revelation 2:24). And guess what? The source of our dysfunction is not Him.

God has all the relational integrity and we have all the need. He has promised to provide what we by nature fail to bring. His simple request – open the door and connect with Me. (Revelation 3:20). The reason? I love you (Revelation 3:19). Your answer … ?

Credit, Climate Change & the Sabbath

Julian Archer, the author of Help, I’ve Been Blessed, sent out these thoughts in his latest email, The Bruised Camel. It is intriguing – I invite you to thoughtfully read it.

You try to pay for groceries but your credit card is denied and a message comes on the screen that reads, ‘Sabbath Breaker’. What a weird and seemingly impossible situation.

For more than 160 years, Seventh-day Adventists have been teaching that a time will come when national laws will require people to rest from work on Sunday, the day which, based on Catholic traditions, many Christians now call 'the Sabbath’. (Click here for more Information)

If people don’t obey this lawwhich will be created to do things like rest the environment (hooray) and encourage family time (excellent) – then they will not be able to buy or sell (ouch!). (See Daniel 7 and Revelation 13)

With this Adventist teaching in mind I wasn’t surprised to read this recent report:

"Not all of us are called to be saints, but the pope [Francis] … insists that the planet now requires a similar kind of conversion from its inhabitants. We must take on a “less is more,” anti-consumerism approach to life that will lead us to transcend unhealthy anxieties caused by being trapped in consumer culture. We must also celebrate rest, especially from buying and selling, by returning to a focus on keeping the sabbath.” (Click here to read more)

Coincidence, or prophecy being fulfilled? Time will tell.

Click here to sign up to receive Julian’s email newsletter, The Bruised Camel. Click here to go to his website.

Take Time To Pray: from 24-7 Prayer

“It is only because he became like us
that we can become like him.”

– Dietrich Bonhoeffer –

Today, wherever you are, take a moment to stop, pause and take time with God.

    • Praise: Which characteristic of God do you need to hold onto today? Praise God for his love / faithfulness / sacrifice / grace / goodness.
    • Give Thanks: What are the blessings in your life that you want to thank God for? Pick three things in your life that you're grateful for, however small.
    • Pray for Others: Who can you pray for today? Choose one person you're thinking of and pray God's best for them.

Have a wonderful week! To visit their website, click here.

The Profit

Don Jacobsen's blog last weekend was titled The Profit. It tells a story worth considering as we contemplate the future of our church here in Bellevue.

Marcus Lemonis is an unusual name. Sounds like it might have been someone who was assigned to assassinate one of the Roman emperors. Except he was born in Lebanon in 1973, adopted by a couple in Florida, and has become an American citizen – and a very wealthy one. Camping World is America’s largest seller of camping gear and RVs, and is just one of the 140 companies Lemonis owns. His special knack is seeking out companies that are struggling and turning them profitable.

In 2013 CNBC decided to tell his story, and “The Profit” was born. To date he has personally invested $50 million in a score of floundering companies and coaxed them back to health.

I have been intrigued the half dozen times I’ve watched his program. I spotted a fascinating pattern. No matter how desperate the company, no matter the debt load it carries, no matter that all of the sales graphs point down, the owner initially insists on saying No to the changes Marcus wants to make. The owner may already have cut staff, changed the logo, and begun to skimp on quality, the ultimate end of the little company is in view, but the owner is adamant: “This is the way we do it here; this is how it worked when my dad started the company, and we’re not going to make any changes.”

I’ve met with more than a few church leadership teams over the years who had rehearsed that song and could sing it with conviction. We’ve talked before in this space about the fact that the normal life-cycle of a church is approximately the same as the human life-cycle: Launch, growth, slowed-growth, plateau, gradual decline, steeper decline, shut the doors and sell the building. It’s not infallible but unless something happens to re-light the fire, it’s a pretty predictable seventy-year template.

I’ve also learned that anyone who enters the picture and makes suggestions is not always seen as a friend. The pioneers remember how it was before and “if we could just get back to that, we wouldn’t have all these empty seats and empty spaces in the parking lot. Besides, we like it here.” But we’ve watched this long enough to know the trajectory of the church is re-set when a group comes together to pray. I mean these are intercessors. They get it that yesterday’s answers aren’t sufficient for today’s questions.

They will not let go of the arm of God till He helps them understand that the story they have to tell must be fresh every morning and current as the sunrise. Unlike pottery, our message is not valuable because it is old but because God answers each new generation’s questions with exciting new discernment. So they seek for the gift to speak timeless truths in words their communities find compelling. (Click here to read this on line.)

From Bible Gateway’s Weekly Brief

How to Say No and Not Feel Guilty: Are you overwhelmed with your to-do list? Do you feel guilty when you say "no" to anything? Were you taught that "no" is a dirty word? Do you think saying "no" is a sign of weakness? What does the Bible say about saying "no"? Bible Gateway interviewed Kevin G. Harney about his book, No Is a Beautiful Word: Hope and Help for the Overcommitted and (Occasionally) Exhausted. (Click here to read more.)

Spiritual Lessons from the Life of Trees: The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Have you missed the forest...and the trees? For example, the Bible refers to its wisdom as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18). What is the hidden language of trees that can help us better understand God? Bible Gateway interviewed Matthew Sleeth, MD about his book, Reforesting Faith: What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us. (Click here to read more.)

When My Life Suffered a Dream-Crushing Blow: Chris Norton, who, along with his wife Emily, is the author of The Seven Longest Yards: Our Love Story of Pushing the Limits While Leaning on Each Other, says, "From the moment my body hit the ground after the tackle that put me in this mess, I had focused completely on what I could not do. I could not move; I could not feel; I could not breathe. The obstacles kept getting bigger and bigger until they completely overwhelmed me. Everything changed when I switched my focus to what I could do …" (Click here to read more.)

Freedom

This week we celebrate freedom. July 4, 1776 was the day our forefathers declared their freedom from England by signing the Declaration of Independence. We still celebrate these unique freedoms 243 years later – although it does seem like many of these freedoms are being challenged.

More than 1,980 years ago, another event took place that produced the greatest freedom we can ever experience. This freedom has been enjoyed by countless millions down through the centuries – far more than have enjoyed the freedoms of our country.

This kind of freedom can take place independent of your place of residence, your income, your health, your marital status, or your vocation. I have met people in prison who are experiencing this freedom. I have met people on their deathbeds who are experiencing this freedom. And, I have lived alongside many who are learning what this freedom means.

Just like the freedom of our country, which we enjoy freely – this freedom is free to everyone, but it cost the very best Heaven had to offer, the life and death of God’s only Son. (See 1 John 4:9-10)

What He has promised, and offers you and me is:

Freedom from the Penalty of Sin – a life free of guilt and regret, allowing you to live free from worry about your eternity. (See Romans 3:20-26; 1 John 5:11-13; Steps to Christ, page 62)

Freedom from the Power of Sin – a life that continues to be more and more free from the power of sin, freeing you to live the way God created you to live – trusting in Him and glorifying Him with your life and your words. (See Romans 5:20 – 6:8; Romans 6:20-23; Romans 8:1-4; Steps to Christ, page 62)

Freedom from the Presence of Sin – an eternal life free from the enticements and the consequences of sin. If you die before He comes, you will be resurrected as a perfect person. If you’re alive when He comes, you will be changed as you are taken to meet Him (see 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). And you will live with Him in a place free from the influences of sin – a place where God Himself will wipe every tear from your eyes … (See Revelation 21:1-4)

Even in our “land of the free” it is possible to live without real freedom – to be controlled by our sinful desires and consequences of poor choices. Don’t miss out on the best freedom there is to offer.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:16-17, NKJV)

I hope you have a great 4th. I pray that every day you may experience the freedom you can only find in Jesus!

We have spent several weeks looking at this freedom as expressed in the Book of Romans. Click here to download a PDF copy of the latest sermon in this series which has links to all of the sermons in this series listed in the Resource Section of the document.

What Made Jesus Mad? Christians love to focus on the gentle and tender heart of Jesus. But what about his righteous rage? In the Gospels, what, and who, ignited Jesus’ anger?
