A New Heart!

Our assignment for this week is Ezekiel 36. In the middle of a bunch of hard reading, we find this gem of a promise!

“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.” (Ezekiel 36:25-27 , NLT)

If you read all around this, you understand clearly that God’s promise is not based on the fact that you this – in fact He emphatically states that you do not deserve it in any way.

He is doing this for you because this is simply Who He is!

And what really is He promising to do for you?

First, He cleans up the mess we have made of our lives because of the filth we have embraced and the idols we have worshiped.

Then He removes the heart that got us into trouble in the first place and replaces it with a new, clean one – a heart that is aligned with Him.

And then He gives us His Spirit to guide us and to keep us from messing it up again.

He takes care of the process from beginning to end.

In Jeremiah, God said it like this:

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people … For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jeremiah 31:33-34 , NIV)

God is not trying to make salvation difficult. Jesus did the really hard work on the cross. God does the hard work in your life – all He needs is your trust and cooperation.

Love Does Not Rejoice in the Failures of Others

This is Part 10 of a series titled Love Matters Most, a blog on Lightbearers’ website.

My best friend and I were trying to master a challenging skateboard maneuver. The goal was to dip down from the shallow end of an empty pool into the deep end, shoot up for a split second of air, grind along the top edge, and then dip back down the vertical wall. It was always difficult to detect who was better between the two of us. Our skill levels tended to track neck and neck. On this particular occasion I was getting nervous, because he was doing better than me – until he overcorrected, lost control, and came crashing down. In that moment, a sinister joy arose in me… (Click here to read the rest of the article.)

This Week at Golden Hills: Oct. 10, 2020

Web Master - Thursday, October 08, 2020

He Promised!

Our assignment for this week is Isaiah 43. As I have spent some time with it, I have been reminded again of the beautiful promise it contains. And this is not just the prophet’s summary, it is God’s words in quotation marks!

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior … you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 43:1-5, NLT)

Have you felt like you’re drowning in all that is going on around you? Do you feel like life and your burdens are consuming you?

You’re not alone. You’re precious and loved by God. He is with you!

Don’t let God’s lament, recorded in verse 22 be true about you.

“But, dear family …, you refuse to ask for my help.” (Isaiah 43:22, NLT)

Come to Him and pour out your heart to Him, tell Him what’s going on and ask for His presence and help.

And then, rest in His care.

Relentless Pursuit

This week Don Jacobsen's blog is titled Relentless Pursuit. I love the conclusion it comes to.

My hunch is that because you’re a reader you are already familiar with the name Philip Yancey. He has more than 15,000,000 books in print, translated into more than fifty languages, making him one of the most widely read Christian authors ever.

Yancey grew up in a Fundamentalist church in south Georgia and it was so toxic it nearly cost him his faith in Jesus. He would be a young adult before he came to peace with the meaning of grace.

Some of his books are classics, like “The Gift of Pain” and “Church, Why Bother?” Some of them are hyper-classics. Books like, “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” and “Where Is God When It Hurts?” You likely won’t agree with everything he writes, but you’ll be challenged and blessed.

He is not easily intimidated. There are fifty-four mountain peaks in Colorado that are higher than 14,000 feet. Yancey has climbed all but three of them … (Click here to read the rest of the story.)

This Week at Golden Hills: Oct. 3, 2020

Web Master - Thursday, October 01, 2020

Back to Basics

This week I am sharing Don Jacobsen's blog titled Back to Basics. I love the questions it asks about prayer and our worship service.

It could be argued that nothing more important is going to happen in your town this week than when your church gathers to worship. God re-seen and His people re-made. What hour could outrank that one?

In the 1960/61 football season the Green Bay Packers had played well. They were ahead in the final quarter of the NFL Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but they got sloppy and blew the lead, losing the championship to Philadelphia. Green Bay was devastated and so was their head coach, Vince Lombardi.

Late the next summer Lombardi called the 38 professional athletes together to begin their training camp for a new season. He walked to the front of the room, held up a football and uttered what has become an iconic motivational 5-word sentence. “Gentlemen,” he said, “this is a football.” Everyone knew this preseason would be about basics.

They would be right. Six months later the Green Bay Packers beat the New York Giants 37 – 0 to win the NFL championship. They would win five of the next seven seasons. Now, more than half a century later, the annual winner of the Super Bowl still receives the Lombardi trophy.

What might happen if, as leaders of God’s church, we were as committed to excellence?

What if the elders and the worship committee were to come together following mid-week prayer service and pray the worship plans into existence?

What if the morning hymn was chosen because of its majesty and not just because “we haven’t sung this one for a while”?

What if the participants were to think through what should be included in the morning prayer?

A time of praise and thanksgiving; a time of repentance; a time of supplication for the lost including those who at that moment are driving by outside; for the deep needs of our nation; that God would break our hearts with the things that break His …

What if we’d ask Him what He wants us to pray for?

Jesus desired that His church should be a house of prayer. What does that mean? Is that the most important part of the service? Should it be? If it is, how should we prepare for it?

Should it sound a lot like last week’s, or should it be built around this week’s needs and crises? Should there be a time for the congregation to voice its praises?

Should more than one person pray? Should there be a palpable intensity that this isn’t just a ritual, but an experience where the worshipers sense they have been invited into the throne room of the universe? Should we conclude with a hushed, “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord …” or an exultant line of worship, “All hail the power of Jesus’ name …”

Please know I am not attempting to script the worship service at your church, but rather to urge that we bathe it in prayer so He can create a truly life-transforming event every week. Back to basics with sanctified excellence. (Click here to read it online)

We still continue with social distancing, required face masks, and a format for our worship that focuses on both those who are watching at home and those attending in person.

As we move forward from here, we will use the Pastor’s Blog, Golden News, our Website, and Remind to keep you informed.

Whenever you feel you’re ready to join us in person, you’ll be welcome – as long as you’re willing to follow the current health and safety guidelines (click here to see them).

Adventist Screening Verification

In cooperation with the Kansas Nebraska Conference, we are working with Adventist Screening Verification to provide background checks and on-line education for our church officers and everyone who works with our children. This helps ensure that we have some training to help us recognize and avoid situations that would put our children at risk.

In addition to our elected Church Officers, everyone who works with Pathfinders and Adventurers, Children’s or Youth Sabbath School Classes, Children’s Church, and VBS must go through this training and submit to a background check (there is no cost to you or to our church). It will take about an hour of your time.

To begin this process, click here, then select First-Time Registrant and follow the instructions. If you have completed this in the past three years, you should get an email reminder when it is time for you to renew your certification. For more information, contact Pastor T (402-517-5333).
