Happy Thanksgiving – I’m Thankful!

We had kind of crazy week.

Saturday night, right after sundown we heard a loud bang and our house suddenly went dark and silent.

I went outside, sure the power was off on our street, but all the houses had lights on and the street lights were blazing.

So, I went downstairs and checked our electric panel and was greeted by a bad smell and a blown main breaker.

As it turns out, after our dishwasher was repaired a couple of weeks ago, it leaked. It is directly above the electric panel (a great design feature) and the dripping water corroded the metal in the breaker and it blew up.

We’re fortunate there was not a fire.

They had to replace the entire breaker box because of the damage and it was completed on Monday afternoon. We have the dishwasher people coming back out to fix it, and we’ll have to do some misc. repair work here and there.

It was a bit of an adventure – cooking on a camp stove in the garage, extra blankets on the beds, heavy sweaters and jackets in the house. Wonderful friends and neighbors who reached out to help in numerous ways.

It made me realize how much I take for granted – things like simply turning up the heat, flipping a switch to turn on a light, pushing a button rather than wrestling the garage door.

It also made me realize the number of people who care deeply – good friends and even new neighbors who don’t know us all that well yet.

And, in addition to all of this, our daughter has been here enjoying the adventure with us!

We have a lot to be thankful for.

It also made me think of those people who deal with these conditions on a daily basis without a home, no bed with warm blankets to sleep in, no one-burner camp stove to make a warm meal, and often even lacking enough food.

What can we do to help these people? How can we as Christians continue to enjoy all we have when there are so many who are going without even the basic necessities of shelter and food?

It reminds me of the question the Apostle John asks:

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion – how can God’s love be in that person? (1 John 3:17 , NLT)

I’m praying about this, asking God to direct me as I move forward. I invite you to do the same.

This is an important part of loving like Jesus.

Is There a Pattern Here?

This week Don Jacobsen's blog is titled Is There a Pattern Here?. It’s about the power of praying for our children.

A couple of years ago Ruthie and I were travelling through Virginia, and as we entered the city of Fredericksburg we discovered it was the burial place of George Washington’s mother. Both of us are amateur history buffs so we searched till we found it. The site is not in a cemetery but in a single location dedicated to her life.

But nearby we found something of even greater interest. It’s a couple of large rocks called Meditation Rock. Here Mary, mother of George, spent what she described as “countless hours meditating and praying” for her son and for the struggling government over which he would soon preside. It was not hard to imagine the correlation between her incessant intercession and his success in leading the new nation.

In the first 20 years of their marriage, Samuel and Susanna Wesley had 19 children though not all would survive infancy. (Incidentally, Susanna was the first of 25 children in her own family growing up.) Without the benefit of packaged foods or even a washing machine, Susanna developed a plan to secure her daily prayer time for each of her children. She would sit in the kitchen and pull her apron over her head and pray. Anytime the children saw her in this pose they knew they were to interrupt only in case of fire or impending death(Click here to read the rest of the story.)

You are encouraged to donate to the Wall of Love by marking it on your tithe envelope or going to our online giving portal (by clicking here) and entering it the amount under Wall of Love.

Communications/Social Media Director

We are looking for a Communications/Social Media Director for our Church. This person will be responsible for communicating our mission and activities to our members and our community. They will use a combination of methods to reach as many people as possible. This would include keeping our website and calendar useful and up to date. It would also include using text messaging, Facebook (and other online social media), and emails along with the more traditional methods of mail, newsprint, radio, and TV ads as appropriate. If this sounds interesting to you and you would like to explore it further, contact either Kalvin Tuel (kalvin.tuel@gmail.com or 402-201-6370) or Pastor T (martinsent@gmail.com or 402-517-5333).

COVID Response Update

If you have been following the news, you know we are seeing the highest rate of COVID infections and hospitalizations we have ever had here in the Omaha area since the beginning of the Pandemic.

Because of this, our Church Board this week voted to discontinue all in-person activities and only hold online services going forward. We will re-evaluate this at our board meeting each month and will return to our building as soon as it seems safe to do so.

This means there will be no in-person Worship Services, Sabbath School Classes, Pathfinders, Adventurers, Prayer Meetings, Board Meetings, or MLT Meetings at our Church Facility.

We will continue to livestream our Worship Service each Sabbath beginning at 11:10 am with Mission Spotlight and our Children’s Corner. You can view it on our Website, our Facebook Page, or our YouTube Channel.

Prayer Meetings, Board Meetings, and MLT Meetings will continue via our Church Zoom Channel. Click here for instructions on how to join one of these meetings.

As we move forward from here, we will use the Pastor’s Blog, Golden News, our Website, and Remind to keep you informed.

I know this is disappointing. It felt like we were just getting some momentum building back up – and however we may frame it, it feels like a step backward.

However, Jesus’ mandate to love each other (see John 13:34-35) means we will not expose others to unnecessary risks. We will not provide more opportunities for COVID to expand in our community.

It also means we will look out for one another. Please call and check in on people God brings to your mind. They may not need any specific help, but a thoughtful conversation can change the outlook of an otherwise bleak and lonely day.

Above all, keep your connection with God secure. Don’t neglect to spend time with Him in the Bible and talking with Him in Prayer. This is where your strength to survive, and even thrive will come from.

Communion Sabbath

This Sabbath we will be celebrating Communion during our worship service.

I know, it’s a bit unusual due to the fact that most everyone will be watching from home. We’ve never done it this way before.

But it’s been so long since we have had one, and we have no idea how long it will be until it will be safe for us to celebrate it together in person, so we thought why not try this at home.

The main thing is it will take a little thought and preparation on your part. If you wish to participate, you will need to think ahead to have the ingredients to make it happen.

The good news is, it’s not complicated (To download some instructions and the assignment for Sabbath, click here.)

If you live close enough to stop by the church, you can pick up some communion cups from the church found in the Operation Christmas Child drop-off box outside the west lobby entrance (side facing the school building). Take as many as you need for your family to use. These have a communion wafer when you peel away the first layer of the top, and then you peel the second layer for the grape juice.

If you can’t get by the church you may pick up some unleavened crackers and grape juice rom the grocery store. Triscuits, most Water Crackers, and Wasa Crackers are all unleavened as are many of the gluten free options.

Most importantly, pray that God’s Spirit will give us a clear picture of God’s love as we celebrate this important occasion. See you Sabbath! You can view it and participate on our Website, our Facebook Page, or our YouTube Channel.

God’s Got This

This week Don Jacobsen's blog is titled God's Got This. Some great facts and suggestions.

As I look around, may I list half a dozen indisputable learnings:

    1. We’ve learned that even in the midst of one of the most devastating global events in human history, we can still trust the God who made the stars. Even though we’re in a mess, God’s got this.
    2. It is confirmed that there’s an enemy loose in the universe and that he is still intent on destroying everything God ever made. Like the Book says, “An enemy has done this.” He is intentional, strategic, and relentless.
    3. We have been alerted that it’s gonna get worse – much worse – before it gets better … (Click here to read the rest of the story.)

Compassion Again

In Luke 10, one of the passages in this week’s assignment, we find the following conversation:

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”

The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ (Deut. 6:5) And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Lev. 19:18)

“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus replied with a story: (Luke 10:25-30, NLT)

You remember the story, right? It’s the story of the good Samaritan. One important piece of background information – Jews hated Samaritans. The story went something like this:

This guy, traveling between Jerusalem and Jericho, got beat up, robbed, and left for dead.

A pastor came by and deliberately walked by on the other side of the road.

Then, an elder came by, took a close look, and continued on down the road.

And then a “despised” Samaritan came along, felt compassion for the guy, fixed him up a bit, loaded him up on his deluxe mule, took him to the nearest bed and breakfast where he took care of him through the night.

Next day, he paid the owner in advance to nurse the guy back to health promising to come back by and pay up if more was needed.

At this point Jesus asked:

“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?”

The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” (Luke 10:36-37, NLT)

God sure seems to value compassion that leads to loving action.

End It Now – Virtual Summit on Abuse

The 2020 Virtual Summit on Abuse begins TOMORROW, Friday, November 13 at 9:00 am EST. Watch LIVE on Facebook, and engage with us in the comment section. Or use #EndItNowNAD on Twitter or Instagram.

Abuse can happen anywhere, even in faith communities. You probably know someone who has suffered abuse. Pretending that abuse does not exist in "my church, school, community or home" only perpetuates its continuance. Learn what to do and how to help.

The 2020 Virtual Summit on Abuse (November 13) will provide valuable training that will equip and prepare you for when abuse occurs. You can make a difference. The 2020 keynote speaker will be Mary Demuth, author of “WeToo: How the Church can respond redemptively to the sexual abuse crisis." Click here to learn more about her.

Creating safe churches and communities starts with being informed. Together, we can keep the people in your church, school, camp, and community safe.

Love Never Fails

This is Part 11 of a series titled Love Matters Most, a blog on Lightbearers’ website.

Murphy’s Law states that everything that can go wrong will. I don’t think it’s true, but the law seems to describe 2020 quite well. As if a global pandemic wasn’t enough, we’ve faced murder hornets, wildfires, political tension, and economic uncertainty. In the words of one witty meme: “I don’t know about y’all, but I could really use some precedented times.” 2020 has reminded us how quickly things can change.

The apostle Paul predicted that life as we know it simply wouldn’t last. … (Click here to read the rest of the article.)

This Week at Golden Hills: Nov. 7, 2020

Web Master - Thursday, November 05, 2020

Compassion

In Matthew 25, one of the passages in this week’s assignment we find the following exchange after separating the people into two groups at His Second Coming:

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’” (Matthew 25:34-36, NLT)

Then they will ask when they did all these things.

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

“Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. (Matthew 25:40-41, NLT)

He tells them this will be true because they did do all those things for Him the others had.

And of course, they didn’t remember ever seeing Him to be able to respond by helping him.

“And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

“And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” ( Matthew 25:45-46, NLT)

The one group was lost simply because they were too engrossed in their own affairs to notice and respond to the needs of the people around them.

The other group was saved because they were focused outward with compassion and responded to the needs of people who crossed their paths.

God sure seems to value compassion that leads to loving action.

Where would you find yourself in these two groups?

Desperate Circumstances Often Create Serious Pray-ers

This week Don Jacobsen's blog is titled Desperate Circumstances Often Create Serious Pray-ers. I love the connection between trouble and prayer.

When I was an earliteen one of my heroes was a Christian medic by the name of Keith Argraves. A couple of reasons. First, he was sent to Europe during World War II, was captured by the Nazis and transported to an internment camp in a boxcar. The part of that story I liked was that he took his pocket knife and cut a hole in the end of the train car and escaped. I mean, he was one tough dude.

The other reason is that he had volunteered to become a paratrooper. That meant he would stand at the open door of a perfectly good airplane and jump out. That takes courage. I know that’s true because I did it. Different era; different circumstances. For reasons I don’t remember, we wanted to make a movie of someone jumping out of an airplane. The team chose me. For reasons I don’t remember, I accepted … (Click here to read the rest of the story.)

These items include: body wash, make up sets, deodorant, tear-free shampoo for children, men’s underwear (size L, XL, XXL), tube socks, and $10 gift cards to Target and Walmart.

We will set up a tree in the foyer for those who can drop off contributions in person. You are encouraged to wrap your gift. Please write the contents of the gift on the gift tag.

Those who are watching from home and would still like to participate are encouraged to donate to the Wall of Love by using their tithe envelope or going to our online giving portal (by clicking here) and entering it the amount under Wall of Love.
