No Matches

This week I am sharing Don Jacobsen's blog titled No Matches. I love what it has to say about prayer.

I pray because I’m helpless.

A Friend whom I deeply trust told me that, so I believe Him. He said, “Without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5).

As I’m writing this the west coast of the US is ablaze. Over a million acres has burned in the beautiful state of Oregon where I grew up. Thirty-five dead thus far. Hundreds of thousands are in varying degrees of flight from their homes. And that doesn’t count Washington and California. As much as my heart aches for my friends there, I can do nothing about it.

Except pray.

In many cities in our fair land you do not dare go out of your house after dark. Chaos. Arson. Shootings. Uncivilized unrest. This is not the nation I grew up in. And I can do nothing about it.

Except pray.

A new hurricane is preparing to roar ashore in the Gulf of Mexico. That’s near where some of our grandkids live. We’re concerned for their safety but we can do nothing about it.

Except pray.

I could go on, but I’m not detailing something you don’t know about. In my more than ¾ of a century of watching I’ve never seen anything like it. There are no matches anywhere in our history. It’s never been like this before. Just watching the evening news can give you a profound sense of helplessness.

Except we can pray.

To say that’s all we can do is like saying that all we have to breathe is air; it’s all we need.

But, brother Don, don’t be naive; it’s a scary time.

It is, but He has promised to be our Peace. “Even when it gets nasty, you can trust Me,” He assures us.

But did you see the pictures of those fires?

I did. And those three Hebrew teens saw them, too. Like, up close.

But the hurricanes …

Yes, and remember, our Friend is Master of the storms.

Good people get hurt, too. Believers lose their property, too. Christians die in every war; even Jesus. We’re all participants in this great controversy … We know who wins; we know which side we’re on. Soon the pain will be over and the future will be matchless.

Psalm 23

This week I’m simply sharing Psalm 23. It is written below in the familiar language of the New King James Version. To read it in other versions, click here.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever. (Psalm 23, NKJV)

The Restoration Business

Don Jacobsen's blog last weekend was titled The Restoration Business and shares some thoughts on how we relate to each other.

Recently Ruthie and I were sitting in a Bible study class. Not large; maybe a dozen or fifteen. Although it was off-topic of the material being studied, the teacher raised a question that got everyone’s attention: When is it appropriate for one Christian to rebuke another? he asked.

Rebuke is a rather strident word and I think we were all dredging for the “right” answer. The loving answer. The Jesus answer. We’ve probably all seen it done wrong. I’ve written earlier in this space about a young adult who came to our church to provide a vocal solo during the worship service. The song was not inappropriate, but one lady took offense, arose from her seat, went to the back of the room and stood with her hands over her ears. I wondered what her answer might be to the teacher’s question today. Fortunately, she wasn’t there today. Incidentally, the guest hasn’t been back, either.

… But what if people are being intentionally disobedient…don’t I have a responsibility to call them on that and warn them of the consequences if they don’t change their ways … (Click here to read the entire post.)

Cliffhanger

This week’s blog is written by Julian Archer, author of Help! I’ve Been Blessed. His email newsletter is titled the Bruised Camel. To sign up to receive it, click here.

If you had to hang over a frighteningly high cliff and were given a choice between two ropes – a thin, frayed one, or a scientifically engineered strong one – which rope would you place more faith in? It’s scary either way!

And would you rather step off the cliff with a lot of faith in the thin rope or a little bit of faith in the strong rope?

Ultimately, it wouldn’t matter how much faith you had, because your safety doesn’t rely on your level of faith, it relies on the strength of the rope. Faith is only as good as the object we place it in.

God gives us skills and talents and He encourages us to use them wisely, but never to hang our whole weight on them, or even have faith in them.

Our well-honed skills, our proven strategies, our time-tested programs and maybe even our track record of successes are a great blessing, but God calls us to have faith in Him, not our abilities (Ephesians 2:8-9). Compared to God’s support, even at their grandest all of our skills and talents are just a thin little rope.

What sort of rope are you placing your faith in this week?

Love Believes the Best of Others

This is Part 8 of a series titled Love Matters Most, a blog on Lightbearers’ website.

When you see _ _ NNER, what’s the first word your brain makes? BANNER? TANNER? Heaven forbid, FUNNER?

In his book Talking with Strangers, Malcolm Gladwell writes about a study in which participants were given a list of words with letters missing. They were asked to fill in the blanks to make whatever words first came to mind. Gladwell, trying the exercise himself, wrote: GLUM, HATER, SCARE, ATTACK, and others.

After participants finished, they were asked what they thought their lists revealed about them: if someone writes “SINNER,” are they a different kind of person than if they’d written “BANNER”? Respondents didn’t feel their words said anything about them.

Then they were given another person’s list and asked what they thought it revealed about them. Immediately, everyone had ideas: she’s vain, he’s competitive, she’s on her period, he’s unfocused … (Click here to read the rest of the article.)

From Bible Gateway’s Weekly Brief

How to Establish Boundaries in Your Life: Christians often focus so much on being loving and giving that they forget their own limits and limitations. Have you ever found yourself wondering: Can I set limits and still be a loving person? How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? Why do I feel guilty when I consider setting boundaries? This Week at Golden Hills: Sept. 5, 2020

Web Master - Thursday, September 03, 2020

You Will Find Rest!

Jesus said:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30, NLT)

Jesus makes it pretty simple here.

He simply invites you to come to Him, stay with Him, and learn from Him.

There isn’t a complicated formula to follow, a deep riddle to solve, or a difficult task to accomplish. Simply focus your life on Jesus and following HimHe will teach you, lead you, and work with you to do whatever He wants you to do!

Don’t make it harder than it is. Just do it!

Sabbath Services

We continue to worship in person – at our building – and on line. It’s been nice to have people around us as we worship.

We still continue with social distancing, required face masks, and a format for our worship that focuses on both those who are watching at home and those attending in person. We will continue to add more participation to our worship service.

As we move forward from here, we will use the Blog, Golden News, and our Website to keep you informed.

Whenever you feel you’re ready to join us in person, you’ll be welcome – as long as you’re willing to follow the current health and safety guidelines (click here to see them).

New Sermon Discussion Group

We are beginning a new Sermon Discussion Group through Remind. You will be able to receive the assignment right to your smart phone or desktop, as well as participate in a discussion of it during the week. We will also use this as a way to communicate with the person presenting our message to share comments and questions. To sign up, click here or send a text message to the number 81010 and enter this message @sermond.

New Website

We are right on the verge of launching a new, updated website. You’ll still be able to get there from www.GoldenHillsChurch.org. Keep checking on it. We think you’ll find it more helpful and convenient.

Worship Service DVDs

There is a video recording made of each week’s worship service. It is available on DVD. If you would like to receive these please contact Lori Knutson (402-980-5018).

The Phone Number

Don Jacobsen's blog last weekend was titled The Phone Number and shares some thoughts on how God takes care of His people.

The Republic of Togo is a fascinating little country sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria in West Africa. I’ve been there but only at the airport in the capitol of Lomẽ. It’s a bit smaller than West Virginia and has a population of about 8,000,000. By comparison, West Virginia has just less than 2,000,000.

With heavy voodoo influence, a strong Muslim presence, and scores of local religious enclaves, Christianity has struggled in Togo. But recently, the Seventh-day Adventist church has begun reaching out to Togo nationals and helping train them as church leaders.

Enter Jacque. From the time he became a devout follower of Jesus, Jacque sensed God was calling him to become a pastor. That angered many of the people in his village, some of whom called down curses on Jacque. Once as he was riding his bicycle down a trail a group of five young men attacked him and tried to kill him with machetes … (Click here to read the entire post.)

From Bible Gateway’s Weekly Brief

What Does the Bible Say About Atonement? The Bible presents the mystery of salvation through Jesus Christ in several images. What if those separate images were fit together to comprise one grand impression of Christ's saving work while also allowing each piece to retain its recognizable particularity? Bible Gateway interviewed Joshua M. McNall about his book, The Mosaic of Atonement: An Integrated Approach to Christ's Work. (Click here to read more.)

Spiritual Lessons Christians and Jews Share During the High Holy Days: With the Jewish High Holy Days starting September 18, guest columnist Yael Eckstein, president and CEO of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, says it's a time of introspection and prayer for Jews and Christians alike – a chance for meaningful change, repentance, and reconnecting with God. (Click here to read more.)

If 100 Christians Represented All of Global Christianity: According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, the global Christian population totals 2.5 billion people. To help in the comprehension of that number, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Center for the Study of Global Christianity has compressed it into this graphic as if 100 Christians represented all of global Christianity.
