More Peace – Less Anxiety!

The other day I was reading through the little book of 1 John and a phrase jumped out at me that I had never noticed before. It’s in the first part of chapter 4, verse 16:

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love. (1 John 4:16, NLT)

Most of us would say we know God loves us, although many times we act as though we think He doesn’t really like us all that much. But, how many of us can say that “we have put our trust in His love”?

I can only speak for myself, so I won’t project my thought process on you – God tends to be the first person I blame if something goes wrong. For much of my life, I haven’t trusted in His love, but have doubted it.

I’ve said things to Him like, “If you really loved me, you would not have let …” And, there are a whole bunch of things I could fill in there.

God generally doesn’t explain Himself but just lets things play out – and more often than not looking back on it I’ve had to admit it was the most loving thing He could have done at that moment.

How much simpler life would be if we would just trust in His love. We would find more peace and have less anxiety If we would follow the advice of Paul, where he wrote:

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7, NLT)

And:

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT)

If we would go back to what it was like when we were children, it would be much easier. When we were hurt, or bad things happened to us then, if we had a loving home, the first place we would go was to our mom and dad for comfort and help.

We didn’t blame our parents for those bad things, we counted on them to help us through!

When you are in trouble now, or experience bad things, perhaps you should assume there is an enemy at work and run to God, who demonstrated His love for us through the life and death of Jesus, for comfort and strength.

Perhaps it is time that you and I decide to trust in His love – and experience more peace and less anxiety!

From Bible Gateway’s Weekly Brief

Bite-Sized Bible Knowledge: What if aspects of biblical scholarship could be distilled into understandable bite-sized insights you could read each in 60-seconds to unlock the Bible's individual sections and main teachings? Bible Gateway interviewed Michael Heiser about the 60-Second Scholar Series. (Click here to read more.)

The Bright and Dark Sides of King David: The Bible describes King David as "a man after God's own heart," yet it recounts David's many indiscretions and sins. Do we really reckon with who he was? Have we reduced him to a shepherd boy with a slingshot? How do we come to terms with this flawed-but-mighty king in all his moral complexity? Bible Gateway interviewed Mark Rutland about his book, David the Great: Deconstructing the Man After God's Own Heart. (Click here to read more.)

How to Find the Strength to Move Forward After a Crisis: In this guest Blog post, Tom Holladay, author of Putting It Together Again When It's All Fallen Apart: 7 Principles for Rebuilding Your Life, says, "Our greatest problem is not our problem; it is how we react to that problem. One of the keys to rebuilding is the way we look at problems. The optimist sees possibilities in the problems, and the pessimist sees problems in the possibilities." Check it out by clicking here.

Verified Volunteers – Child Protection Screening

In cooperation with the Kansas Nebraska Conference, we are working with Verified Volunteers to provide background checks and on-line education for our church officers and everyone who works with our children. This helps ensure that we have some training to help us recognize and avoid situations that would put our children at risk. In addition to our elected Church Officers, everyone who works with Pathfinders and Adventurers, Children’s or Youth Sabbath School Classes, Children’s Church, and VBS must go through this training and submit to a background check (there is no cost to you). It will take about an hour of your time. These need to be finished ASAP.

Even if you have recently completed this process with Shield the Vulnerable, you need to do this now with Verified Volunteers because the information did not transfer from one program to the other and we are no longer using Shield the Vulnerable due to many problems with their work.

To download a PDF page of instructions and links to help you through this process, click here. To go to the website where you begin this process, click here and then select First-Time Registrant and follow the instructions. For more information, contact Pastor T (e-mail or 402-517-5333).
