Cliffhanger

This week’s blog is written by Julian Archer, author of Help! I’ve Been Blessed. His email newsletter is titled the Bruised Camel. To sign up to receive it, click here.

If you had to hang over a frighteningly high cliff and were given a choice between two ropes – a thin, frayed one, or a scientifically engineered strong one – which rope would you place more faith in? It’s scary either way!

And would you rather step off the cliff with a lot of faith in the thin rope or a little bit of faith in the strong rope?

Ultimately, it wouldn’t matter how much faith you had, because your safety doesn’t rely on your level of faith, it relies on the strength of the rope. Faith is only as good as the object we place it in.

God gives us skills and talents and He encourages us to use them wisely, but never to hang our whole weight on them, or even have faith in them.

Our well-honed skills, our proven strategies, our time-tested programs and maybe even our track record of successes are a great blessing, but God calls us to have faith in Him, not our abilities (Ephesians 2:8-9). Compared to God’s support, even at their grandest all of our skills and talents are just a thin little rope.

What sort of rope are you placing your faith in this week?

Sabbath Services – Opening Update

We continue to worship in person – at our building – and on line. It’s been nice to have people around us as we worship.

Sabbath School Classes – including all our children’s divisions – are scheduled to resume on October 3. There will be more information from the Sabbath School department coming about expectations and guidelines. For more information contact Andria Bethelmie (402-946-0006).

Pathfinders and Adventurers are planning to begin meeting on Monday, October 5. There will be a pre-meeting and registration event on Sunday, September 20. Watch for more information. For information about Pathfinders contact Holly Degerness (402-917-4718) or Marina Nolasco (402-594-0671); for information about Adventurers, contact Lori Knutson (402-980-5018).

We still continue with social distancing, required face masks, and a format for our worship that focuses on both those who are watching at home and those attending in person.

As we move forward from here, we will use the Pastor’s Blog, Golden News, our Website, and Remind to keep you informed.

Whenever you feel you’re ready to join us in person, you’ll be welcome – as long as you’re willing to follow the current health and safety guidelines (click here to see them).

Love Believes the Best of Others

This is Part 8 of a series titled Love Matters Most, a blog on Lightbearers’ website.

When you see _ _ NNER, what’s the first word your brain makes? BANNER? TANNER? Heaven forbid, FUNNER?

In his book Talking with Strangers, Malcolm Gladwell writes about a study in which participants were given a list of words with letters missing. They were asked to fill in the blanks to make whatever words first came to mind. Gladwell, trying the exercise himself, wrote: GLUM, HATER, SCARE, ATTACK, and others.

After participants finished, they were asked what they thought their lists revealed about them: if someone writes “SINNER,” are they a different kind of person than if they’d written “BANNER”? Respondents didn’t feel their words said anything about them.

Then they were given another person’s list and asked what they thought it revealed about them. Immediately, everyone had ideas: she’s vain, he’s competitive, she’s on her period, he’s unfocused … (Click here to read the rest of the article.)

From Bible Gateway’s Weekly Brief

How to Establish Boundaries in Your Life: Christians often focus so much on being loving and giving that they forget their own limits and limitations. Have you ever found yourself wondering: Can I set limits and still be a loving person? How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? Why do I feel guilty when I consider setting boundaries? Bible Gateway interviewed Dr. John Townsend, who, along with Dr. Henry Cloud, wrote the bestselling book, Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life. Galatians Reminds Us We’re Accepted and Free: When was the last time you thoroughly studied the book of Galatians? Do you know who wrote it, why he did, and how it should impact your life? How to Find the Strength to Move Forward After a Crisis: Tom Holladay, author of Putting It Together Again When It's All Fallen Apart: 7 Principles for Rebuilding Your Life, says, "Our greatest problem is not our problem; it is how we react to that problem. One of the keys to rebuilding is the way we look at problems. The optimist sees possibilities in the problems, and the pessimist sees problems in the possibilities. (Click here to read more.)
