The Death of Death!

In our church family, we have seen our share of death and suffering.

We lost Ed Ziegler and Patsy Whitehill, both members of our congregation. Judy lost both her mom and dad. Danny lost his dad, Rita has lost cousins and uncles, Arvid lost his sister, Tammy lost her mom, and I lost my dad. And, it looks like Elma will soon lose her mom.

And this is just in the past year!

As we look beyond immediate family and to tragedies other than death, we have seen debilitating accidents, crippling disease, and crushing circumstances.

While suffering and death are a natural part of living here on this earth, it was never intended to be a part of our lives – it was not in God’s original plan.

Our life here is terminal. Until Jesus comes, death will continue to cause pain and sorrow.

But, it won’t be like this forever. When Jesus was taken back to Heaven following His death and resurrection, the disciples were told:

“Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!” (Acts 1:11, NLT)

And following His return, His promise is that:

“… He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4, NLT)

The longer I live, the more I look forward to the death of death! (See Revelation 20:11-15)

I look forward to living with Jesus and the Father for eternity the way life was intended to be lived. Until then, I hang on to Jesus and His promises; especially where He said:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6, NIV)

And when He said:

“Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Don’t tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong, as I protect you with my arm and give you victories.

“I am the Lord your God. I am holding your hand, so don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.” (Isaiah 41:10 & 13, CEV)

Here are a few prominent ones that would make a fine starting point for anyone looking for this kind of Bible reading experience … (to read more, click here.
